1582 Miniature Book Of Psalms – By Famous Protestant Printer John Daye

“The Book of Psalms (/sɑː(l)mz/SAH(L)MZ[2] or /sɔː(l)mz/SAW(L)MZHebrew: תְּהִלִּים, Tehillim, lit. “praises”), also known as the Psalms, or the Psalter, is the first book of the Ketuvim (“Writings”), the third section of the Tanakh, and a book of the Old Testament.[3] The title is derived from the Greek translation, ψαλμοί (psalmoi), meaning “instrumental music” and, by extension, “the words accompanying the music”.[4] The book is an anthology of individual Hebrew religious hymns, with 150 in the Jewish and Western Christian tradition and more in the Eastern Christian churches.[5][6] Many are linked to the name of David, but modern mainstream scholarship rejects his authorship, instead attributing the composition of the psalms to various authors writing between the 9th and 5th centuries BC.[6] In the Quran, the Arabic word ‘Zabur’ is used for the Psalms of David in the Hebrew Bible.[7]

We are very pleased to present this unique and rare acquisition for our reader’s enjoyment, viewing, and research. A stunning, enchanting, very rare and collectable, miniature Book Of Psalms printed in 1582 by the famous Protestant printer John Daye. From Wikipedia:  John Day (or Daye) (c. 1522 – 23 July 1584) was an English Protestant printer. He specialized in printing and distributing Protestant literature and pamphlets, and produced many small-format religious books, such as ABCssermons, and translations of psalms. He found fame, however, as the publisher of John Foxe‘s Actes and Monuments, also known as the Book of Martyrs, the largest and most technologically accomplished book printed in sixteenth-century England.[2]

“Day rose to the top of his profession during the reign of Edward VI (1547–1553). At this time, restrictions on publishers were relaxed, and a wave of propaganda on behalf of the English Reformation was encouraged by the government of the Lord ProtectorEdward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset. During the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary I, many Protestant printers fled to the continent, but Day stayed in England and continued to print Protestant literature. In 1554, he was arrested and imprisoned, presumably for these illicit printing activities.[3] Under Queen Elizabeth I, Day returned to his premises at Aldersgate in London, where he enjoyed the patronage of high-ranking officials and nobles, including William CecilRobert Dudley, and Matthew Parker. With their support, he published the Book of Martyrs and was awarded monopolies for some of the most popular English books, such as The ABC with Little Catechism and The Whole Booke of Psalmes.[4] Day, whose technical skill matched his business acumen, has been called “the master printer of the English Reformation”.[5]
