Arrived on 12-06-2022 at 10:00 PM CST, Thompsons Station TN. “The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament, And The New ; Translated Out Of The Original Tongues ; And With The Former Translations Diligently Compared And Revised, Stereotyped By J. Howe , Phiiladelphia Published By Towar & Hogan 25 Market Street , Philadelphia 1829, Antique hardcover. Full leather binding. Gilt ” Holy Bible ” and spine ruling. Marbled endpapers. Pocket-sized : 2 3/4″ x 4 3/8″ x 1 3/4″ thick. Old Testament : 852 pages. New Testament : 258 pages. Nearly 200 years old. Early American Holy Bible printed in Philadelphia. King James Version ( Authorized ). Copper-plate engraved frontispiece and title-page. The frontispiece represents the Old Testament, with Moses , the tablets of the Ten Commandments , etc. The engraved title-page represents the New Testament, with the Lamb Of God ( Jesus Christ ) on the altar of sacrifice, a Cross , a human skull ( representing death ), a goblet, etc., and, above all, Hebrew letters ( which represent God ) shining in a cloud. The name ” John Y. Whitford ” is inscribed on the front blank endpaper, in old ink. On the general title-page is written, in pencil : ” Frank W. Angell ” and ” For the use of Frank W. Angell “Condition. General binding wear. The covers are well attached. There is a small area of lost leather ( about 3/16″ x 1/2” ) at the juncture of the front cover at the spine. ( see the photos ) The inner hinges have been carefully reattached and strengthened with a little Bookbinder’s glue. The front free marbled endpaper has a tear. The frontispiece ( Moses engraving ) is worn. Light foxing ( a little heavier foxing in a few spots ). Some pages have a corner-crease. The last two text pages are worn at the outer edge. Two text pages toward the end of the book of Revelation are not present. The rear free endpapers are not present. ( see the photos ) The binding has been treated with Bookbinder’s Leather Preservative-Restorer to replenish essential oils and help preserve the old leather. Printed in Philadelphia and nearly 200 years old. Carefully packed for shipment.
